The blood ran down Jenny’s arm, hot and smelling of iron, as she plunged the sharpened branch deeper into the wiggling jowl of Bernard Shyer. He gurgled, and she quickly clasped a hand over his mouth to muffle any feeble attempt at a scream. She felt his teeth try to bite her hand away, but shock had set in and his nibble lacked enthusiasm.

He went limp, and Jenny managed to ease his massive body down. She contemplated dragging him and trying to hide the corpse, but realized that would be an arduous task. Though she’d found enough food to survive on, it still left her weak. Hauling three hundred pounds of limp meat would be a chore for even a trained bodybuilder. She decided against it and continued her way to Miles’ cabin.

She hadn’t wanted to kill Bernard, but he’d left her no choice. As soon as she’d appeared from the thick brush, he spotted her. Fortunately, he was busy relieving himself onto a tree and her sudden appearance had shocked him. She’d seen his mouth open, and knew a scream was on the way. It had been a blur—the attack. The murder. Was she any better than Charles? She didn’t feel bad about what she’d done, justifying it as necessity in the name of survival. Still, someone would stumble upon the body, and the alarm would sound. Time was running out. She had to find Miles and convince him to run away with her, deep into the forest.

There was a cave she’d taken residence in that provided ample access to fruit and clean drinking water. They could live there for as long as needed, and as the days went by, she believed help would arrive. They weren’t no-bodies. Their parents were powerful people, and she couldn’t imagine they’d go a long period of time without hearing word from their kids. Unless . . .

Unless this was all just some sick experiment. Like reality television, but worse. Were they put here on purpose and forced into a situation where they’d have to do the most heinous things imaginable to survive? Could it be their parents were ashamed of them and banished them to a living Hell? A single tear rolled down Jenny’s mud-stained face, but she refused to wipe it away. In the tradition of her people, she’d wear it like a badge of honor. She’d earned that tear, and hoped there wouldn’t be more by the end of the night.

Torches lit a trail for her and the cabins stood dark and silent. The hour was late and she knew the campers were asleep. She’d scouted the camps for a few nights now, and noticed two or three campers usually walked around on patrol, operating on some kind of shift. Stumbling upon poor Bernard had been a surprise she hadn’t anticipated, but luckily it was one that hadn’t cost her life. The other two guards she’d known were absent, and she guessed were busy slumbering somewhere, or blowing one another. Who knows what went on in this place after hours.
